Basic Function of the Position –


The incumbent serves as Translator for the Defense Attaché Office.


The incumbent assists the Senior Defense Official, Attachés, support staff, and DAO Temporary Duty/visitors, as required. Incumbent has the mental dexterity to independently decide when to take action and when to defer actions to other Local Employed Staff, as required by the Operations Coordinator.


The incumbent will be providing professional translation and will be assisting with distinguished visitors, to include event planning, coordination, and execution.


The incumbent will conduct simple translations from English and Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian) when mission dictates. As needed, the incumbent drafts and translates unclassified official correspondence in English and Arabic.


The incumbent manages and performs diverse administrative duties, including but not limited to, preparing and delivering correspondence, greeting and assisting visitors, answering telephones/emails, sending faxes, and managing air clearances through the Aircraft and Personnel Automated Clearance System (APACS).  At times, the incumbent must act as a driver.

Three years of government administrative experience with translation or interpretation is required. Prior experience working directly with executive level event support is also required.


JOB KNOWLEDGE:  


Must have excellent computer and analytical problem-solving skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task within strict deadlines as required without full knowledge of the tasking. Knowledge of host country military, political, economic, and social structures and protocols; institutions; historical background; and key personnel. Administrative duties: use of MS applications, filing, typing, faxing, emailing,etc.


 

Education Requirements:

Two years of college studies is required. 

Evaluations:

LANGUAGE:  


Level IV (Fluency) in speaking/reading/writing of English. (This will be tested).


Level IV (Fluency) in speaking/reading/writing of Arabic..


SKILLS AND ABILITIES 


Drafts diplomatic correspondence. Utilizes a fax machine. Required fluency in English and Arabic to permit error-free translations. Must be respectful to personnel/guests of this office and to cultural differences. Able to cultivate and maintain good working relations with personnel at all levels of the national, regional, provincial, and local governments. Incumbent is required to exercise considerable diplomacy, sound judgment, and organizational skills, on a daily basis, to execute a myriad of activities. Must be flexible and adaptable to ever-changing office environment/requirements. Must be able to maintain a valid driver’s license and pass the driving requirements set by the embassy.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

* IMPORTANT:  Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.  A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.
