Provide outpatient and/or inpatient medical care to in-scope patients according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients’ health conditions.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevent. Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
- Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood.
- Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients, through daily visits , consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.
- Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
- Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patient’s illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material.
- Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
- Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
- Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary.
Main Responsibilities:
Provide medical care to survivors of sexual violence (women, children, men) in outpatient settings after completion of training in delivery of MSF’s comprehensive package of care for survivors of sexual violence. Provide general medical care in a limited outpatient clinic setting.
- Receive the patient appropriately, creating a relationship of trust.
- Conduct a medical interview, write down the patient’s history in his/her own words.
- After obtaining consent, conduct the medical examination - decide whether hospitalization is needed.
- Register and complete the medical file respecting applicable rules regarding confidentiality of the patient.
- Complete a medical legal certificate, explain its use. File or hand over the certificate, respecting rules regarding the security and confidentiality of the patient.
- Provide appropriate treatment of the survivor following MSF protocols.
- Evaluate the patient’s understanding of the treatment received: purpose, side effects, correct intake.
- Consult with a medical provider with higher level of training/skill when required.
- Provide items for the immediate comfort of survivor, such as food, water, blanket, etc.
- Communicate with psychologist or social worker according to referral protocol when shelter or specialized medical care needed.
- Schedule the patient’s follow up visit according to protocol.
- Evaluate the patient’s understanding of the purpose of the follow-up consultation(s).
- Ensure prompt medical care is delivered to survivors.
- Ensure psychological/emotional support throughout the consultation.
- Guarantee that patient confidentiality is respected, including correct handling of all documentation.
- Ensure quality and continuity of care to patients and uphold patient dignity
- Treat all patients with the maximum respect, independently from race, origin, religious or political belonging, acknowledging that any abuse of authority or power will not be tolerated.
- Be able to work in the clinic as part of a team with other medical and non-medical staff, as well with supervisors and management, in order to facilitate a healthy team dynamic.
- Apply medical knowledge and skills to examine, assess, diagnose and treat patients, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols. Refer when patient is out of scope.
- Follow up on patient referrals as required.
- Know and ensure that all MSF protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control.
- Participate and present case-studies in the clinic on a regular basis to share medical knowledge and to analyze data to improve patient care and quality control.
- Collaborate with the nursing staff professionally in providing medical care to all patients
- Participate actively in medical and interdepartmental meetings
